The Economy Drive

Brigadier Hawk, the Chairman of Dobson and Hawks department store has issued an order for the staff to economise. Leonard Swindley, assistant manager, proves excellent at the task - even cutting the boss down to size!

January Sale

Swindley gets himself invoved with a married woman and her jealous husband at Dobson and Hawks January sales. It all starts when Swindley sells the managers £75 fur coat for £4 19s 6d in the bargain basement. Swindley attempts to get in back. He finally traces the coat to one of the store’s assistants ,but unfortunately for Swindley she has a very large jealous husband. After the encounter Swindley finds he has no permanent injury . At the least the coat has been returned but are Swindley’s troubles over?

The Resignation

After a misunderstanding Mr Hunt writes an angry letter of resignation. When he discovers that he misinterpreted Brigadier Hawk’s intentions, he needs to get the letter back before it reaches the Brigadier’s desk. Swindley has some ideas.

Self Defence

Every time Mr Swidnely goes to the bank he is taking his life in his hands. The answer, he decides, lies with judo. But when Mr Swindley tries to throw his weight around he makes trouble for everyone including the vicar. After a few bouts in the stockroom with Mrs Edgeley the canteen manageress, Mr Swindley decides on professional coaching. He enrols with Gerry’s Gym and persuades Mr Hunt to join him. Mr Hunt becomes a black belt.

The Stocktaking

After long weeks of stocktaking Swindley is about to present the report to the area manager, but it turns out the report is missing.

When Mr. Hunt’s wife goes on holiday, Leonard Swindley decides to lend a helping hand and, for once, Mr. Hunt actually misses his wife!

When Mr. Swindley takes on additional duties as Welfare Officer he throws himself in to the role with enthusiasm. An immediate crisis awaits him as he stumbles upon an unattended baby in the stockroom and his desire to find the baby’s mother causes more crossed wires ...

A bunch of high-powered executives descend upon Dobson and Hawks and it looks like the store is about to be sold to a trendy new company. It’s a hostile take-over but it appears that the deal rests upon convincing one shareholder with 10 shares to sell - the owner? - a certain Mr Swindley and he makes the most of his predicament!

Between The Covers

As the store prepares to announce encouraging sales figures, only one department is lacking ... and that department is currently holding a gathering for the ladies book reading circle - hosted by Mr Swindley! In an effort to increase profits, Mr. Hunt arranges a closing down sale of pulp fiction in the Book Department - Mr. Swindley is in a cultural state of shock and his mood is not helped when he is arrested for selling obscene material!

While making his nightly rounds before leaving for home, Mr Swindley finds evidence of nocturnal visitation in the Bedding Department. As Head of Security, Mr. Swindley decides to hold an all night vigil and, once again, manages to misinterpret events ...

Charity balls are not easy to organise as Mr Swindley finds out when he volunteers to oragnise the annual ball. Problems beset him from the word go. He is suspected of having an affair with canteen mangeress Mrs Edgeley whe he invites her to star in the cabaret. then he is caught red0handed with a wife of Sheil Harun El Kebir who is staying at the hotel. to make matters worse an attempt is made on his life with poisoned Turkish Delight. But Mr Swindley manages to outit the would-be murder and put the Sheik forever in his debt.

The Ghost Of Batsworth Castle

Swindley goes ghost-hunting. Dobson and Hawks staff outing begins harmlessly as a day trip to a stately home. But when Swindley and Hunt are mistakenly invited to spend a weekend at the castle, events take a turn for the worse. After a sumptuous dinner, the two guests retire to their chambers with a nightcap and an attack of nerves... A storm rages outside. The scene is set. Swindley and Hunt recall that Sir Percy Batsworth came to a horrible end in the 15th century, flung into the moat in full armour. They say that on certain nights he emrges from the moat an walks into the east wing of the castle. Could this be the night?

Leonard Swindley has never been allowed to forget that Leading Seaman Bell once saved his life. But he sets out to repay the debt. Mr Swindley has just been installed in Dobson and Hawks sho-flat when Bell decides to pay him a visit. With him comes trouble. Brigadier Hawk is on his way to inspect the falt when Mrs Bell arrives to stay with her husband. Swindley worries when a second Mrs Bell turns up. How can he keep the two women apart and out of the brigadier’s sight?

Mr Swindley plays the Power Game with dinner parties, intimate candlelight and he hopes witty conversation. The reason for subtle bribery - promotion. The manager of Dobson and Hawks biggest store is leaving. If Swindley can get Hunt into the vacancy, he will be hot favourite himself for Hunt’s old job. A quiet dinner party for the cahirman of Dobson and Hawks, Lord Penge and his lady, should do the trick. There is one problem. Mrs Hunt can’t cook. Swindley has the answer - call in a firm of catering specialists. But is that the answer?

Swindley accidentally sets a new teenage fashion trend-the Gear Granny look when he launches Dobson and Hawks’ new boutique. On the store’s 100th anniversary, Sir Charles dobson decides on a change of image and puts Swindley in charge of modernisation. Swindley gets the message and orders all the way-out with-it, fab, switched on gear he can find. He puts Mr Edgeley in charge of the new froffy coffee bar. Swindley books th top group and hundreds of teenagers mill about outside waiting for the doors to open on the new mod era of Dobson and Hawks. Everything in the garden is swinging or is it?

The Cup That Cheers

Mr Swindley has won the FA Cup. The FA Cup is supposed to go on show in the sports department of Dobson and Hawks. Mr Swindley is put in charge of its safe-keeping. Which means?

On Health Farm Sommet Stirs

Swindley decides to streamline himself for the summer. He gives up Mrs Edgeley’s steak and kidney pudding with dumplings. But he finds it more difficult to persuade the food-happy Mr Hunt that a diet would be good for him. When Mrs Hunt goes away for the weekend, Swindley tricks Mr Hunt into spending two days at the Hilton Hydro - a health farm. It is not until the following morning at breakfast - a glass of hot water and lemon - that Hunt realises where he is. By nightfall he is at the end of his tether and is resorting to the most underhand methods to satisfy his craving for food...
